Complete and basic dinghy booms from Seldén, covering over 25 classes in aluminium and carbon across sections from 2420 to Ultima and BC086, fully fitted to class specification or in basic form for dealer completion.
Seldén booms are available in complete and basic specifications. A complete boom is fully fitted to class racing specification and ready to rig. A basic boom is supplied with the core fittings in place and is intended to be completed by one of Seldén's expert dealers to the sailor's exact specification. If you are ordering a boom to replace one already set up to your preferences, a basic boom gives you more flexibility over outhaul system, cleat positions and other details.
For aluminium booms, the section choice determines stiffness and weight. The 2628 section is the standard choice for classes such as the Enterprise, GP14, Graduate, Lark, British Moth, Vaurien and Streaker, providing a well-proven balance of stiffness and weight. The 2633 section is slightly larger and stiffer, used on higher-load classes including the 505, Fireball, Albacore, Flying 15 and Javelin. The 2520 section is smaller and lighter, used on the Firefly and Devon Yawl mizzen. The 2420 section is the smallest aluminium profile, used on the Cadet and Mirror.
The Olympus section is extruded from Seldén XPS aluminium, a proprietary alloy with higher tensile strength than standard grades, making it stiffer and lighter than equivalent standard sections. Olympus is used on the Solo, 420, 470, Snipe, Flying Junior and Scorpion, and is sized to the maximum dimensions permitted under many class rules. The Ultima section uses a plank profile optimised for vertical stiffness and eliminates the underside track entirely, placing the kicker and mainsheet attachments in fixed positions. This reduces weight further and is the dominant choice in the 470 and increasingly popular in the 420.
The Europe boom uses the 2229 section developed specifically for that class, supplied black anodised.
For carbon booms, the BC086 oval section is used across the widest range of classes including the 505, Contender, Merlin Rocket, National 12, National 18, Phantom, British Moth and Streaker. It is described as super stiff and ultra light. Carbon booms typically use over-boom lashings and vang strops rather than track-mounted sliding eyes, as the carbon profile does not have a conventional lower track. The BC089 section is used on the Flying Dutchman and Hornet. The BC060 section is used for the Streaker carbon boom. The ILCA boom is maximum stiffness, available only through licensed ILCA builders and their authorised dealers.
The Optimist Pro booms use 7075 T9 alloy with cold drawing and a 1.2mm wall thickness. The Pro Flex (42mm tube) suits lighter sailors and provides more bend and gust response. The Pro Stiff (47mm tube) suits sailors over approximately 40kg and pairs with both the Pro Flex and Pro Stiff masts.
