Line Management: Cleats, Fairleads and Deck Fittings

Seldén cam cleats, valley cleats, fairleads, through-deck leads, low friction rings and deck swivels for dinghy control line routing.

How to choose

This collection covers four main product families: cam cleats, valley cleats, fairleads and through-deck leads. The right choice depends on where the line runs, what diameter it is, and how you need to hold or release it.

Cam cleats grip and release a line with a single upward pull. The 27 mm cam cleat suits lines from 3 to 7 mm and mounts with M4 fasteners on a 27 mm hole spacing. The 38 mm cam cleat suits lines from 4 to 12 mm and mounts with M5 fasteners on a 38 mm hole spacing. Within each size, choose between aluminium cams and composite cams. Aluminium cams give more grip under high load and are the better choice for sheets and heavily loaded controls. Composite cams are lighter and suit trim lines where load is moderate. All cam cleats in this collection are from the Seldén Mk2 range (from 2022).

Cam cleat accessories let you optimise the installation for your deck layout. A top guide helps the line enter the cleat correctly from above. A fairlead with stainless lining guides the line in from an angle without wear. A line guide aligns the line entering from forward of the cleat. A riser raises the cleat body by 15 mm to clear obstructions or improve the entry angle. A wedge kit sets the cleat at a 10° angle for better rope alignment on an angled surface. Nut recesses give a cleaner installation finish. Bulls eye fittings are a deck-mounted base and top-guide pair that guide the line into the cleat from directly below.

Cam cleats with swivels integrate the cleat into an articulating mount. The deck swivel suits mainsheet leads. The mast swivel suits lines coming from the mast including cunningham, gennaker halyard and gnav on keelboats. The eye swivel suits control lines close to the deck such as jib sheets and vang on each side of the coachronf.

Valley cleats are cleats where the line drops into toothed jaws and is held by friction. They are commonly used for halyards and control lines on dinghy masts and spars. The open cleat is the simplest version. Fairlead versions guide the line into the teeth. Side entry versions allow the line to be inserted from the side without threading. Roller versions reduce friction on the line as it enters the cleat. The trapeze and vang cleat is a heavier-duty version for 4-8 mm lines in high-load applications. Fineline and sail line cleats are handed port/starboard versions for leech lines and sail controls on 3-6 mm line. Tapered pads adjust the cleat angle for better rope alignment and are available in five sizes matched to specific cleat models.

Fairleads guide lines along the deck without a block. Polyamide fairleads suit low-load and light trim line applications. Polymer versions with stainless lining are suited to applications where the line runs frequently and wear matters. Bulls eye fairleads with stainless lining suit deck-level line lead applications on lines up to 10 mm and 14 mm.

Through-deck leads are hard anodised aluminium fittings for routing a line cleanly through a deck or coaming. The 1-sided version is used where the line is not deflected on the inside of the deck. The 2-sided version has upper and lower fittings connected by an aluminium distance tube that can be cut to the exact deck thickness. Both are available in four line sizes from 5 mm to 12 mm for 1-sided, and three sizes from 5 mm to 10 mm for 2-sided.

What's in this collection

The Mk2 cam cleat range covers the 27 mm size (lines 3-7 mm, M4 fasteners) in aluminium cams (433-151-01R) and composite cams (433-165-01R), and the 38 mm size (lines 4-12 mm, M5 fasteners) in aluminium cams (433-351-01R) and composite cams (433-365-01R).

Cam cleat accessories for both sizes include top guides, fairleads with stainless lining, line guides, risers, wedge kits, nut recesses and bulls eye fittings. All are sized and matched to either the 27 mm or 38 mm cleat range.

Cam cleats with swivels include a deck swivel with 38 mm composite cam (433-401-01R, max 12 mm), a mast swivel with 27 mm composite cam (433-501-01R, max 7 mm), a mast swivel with 38 mm composite cam (433-501-02R, max 12 mm), an eye swivel with 27 mm aluminium cam (433-631-01R, max 7 mm) and an eye swivel with 38 mm aluminium cam (433-632-01R, max 12 mm).

The valley cleat range covers open, fairlead, side entry, roller, trapeze/vang, fineline and sail line variants in aluminium and composite, across line sizes from 1-6 mm up to 6-12 mm. Tapered pads for angle adjustment are available in five sizes (47 mm, 57 mm, 59 mm, 79 mm and 87 mm) matched to specific cleat models.

Fairleads are available in polyamide (3 mm, 5 mm and 8 mm) and polymer with stainless lining (4 mm and 8 mm). Bulls eye fairleads with stainless lining cover lines up to 10 mm (508-604R) and 14 mm (508-605R).

Through-deck leads in hard anodised aluminium are available 1-sided for lines up to 5 mm (420-510-01R), 7 mm (420-511-01R), 10 mm (420-512-01R) and 12 mm (420-514-01R), and 2-sided for lines up to 5 mm (420-520-01R), 7 mm (420-521-01R) and 10 mm (420-522-01R).

The low friction ring range in black anodised aluminium covers lines from 3 mm to 20 mm across six sizes: ø12 mm outer (420-500), ø18 mm (420-501), ø25 mm (420-502), ø35 mm (420-503), ø50 mm (420-504) and ø70 mm (420-505). Low friction rings are suited to static load applications such as backstay cascades, barber haulers and kicker tackles.

Additional fittings include the sheet lead (442-136R, black anodised aluminium, max 10 mm, 2xM6), the dead end (480-351, max 6 mm, for terminating mainsheet bridles and soft attachment ends), the angled exit bush (319-792, for leading lines through mast and boom walls, also used as a through-deck lead in classes such as the 420) and the polyamide cleat 100 mm (511-030, installed with ø4.8 mm pop-rivets).
