How to choose
The first question is whether your rig uses an internal or external halyard system. External halyard systems use a hook or rack at the mast to tension the halyard from outside the spar. Internal halyard systems route the halyard inside the mast and use a bullet-and-lock mechanism to hold the sail at full hoist. These are fundamentally different systems and the products in this collection are not interchangeable between them.
For external halyard systems, the choice is between the Simple Halyard Lock, the Halyard Hook Rack and the Rig Tension Car. The Simple Halyard Lock suits classes where a fixed hook at the masthead is the standard arrangement. The Halyard Hook Rack gives 80mm of adjustment across 8 positions, useful where precise rig tension needs to be set and repeatable. The Rig Tension Car is the most refined option, replacing the conventional hook and block with a ball-bearing sheave car that runs on the mast track and includes a becket for a 2:1 or 3:1 purchase system.
For internal halyard locks, you must specify aluminium or carbon spar. The two versions are not interchangeable. Retro-fitting either lock requires cutting a slot in the mast and accurate positioning — professional fitting is strongly recommended. For carbon spars, do not fit without first consulting Seldén.
The Black Band Track Clamp is relevant only to boats with Ultima section booms. It is compulsory under 420 class rules and advisable for any class where the black band measurement limit must be enforced on the boom.
What's in this collection
The Simple Halyard Lock (508-484) is a pressed stainless steel external halyard hook fitted at the masthead. It works with a 2–3mm wire halyard with a copper ferrule, or an HMPE halyard with a knot and nut. Commonly used on Europe, Finn and Splash spars.
The Dinghy Halyard Lock, complete with rivet is an internal halyard lock available in two versions: for aluminium spars (508-636-01) and for carbon spars (508-636-51). A bullet fitted to the main halyard engages the lock during hoisting. An additional pull allows the bullet to pass over the lock for lowering. Both versions are supplied with the rivet required for installation.
The Rig Tension Car (511-511-01) replaces the conventional hook and block on jib halyard tension systems. It incorporates a 25mm high-load stainless steel ball-bearing sheave and runs on a nylon slide pad against the spar surface, avoiding the wear that a conventional hook causes to the mast coating. The car is retained on the back of the mast when not in use. It engages in the track at the jib halyard exit slot below the gooseneck and includes a becket for rigging as a 2:1 or 3:1 purchase system.
The Halyard Hook Rack (511-630) is a cast aluminium rack with 8 teeth providing 80mm of adjustment. It is used with 2–3mm wire or a spliced loop in an HMPE halyard.
The Cleat, 100mm (511-030) is a polyamide cleat installed with ø4.8mm pop-rivets, not included.
The Black Band Track Clamp (515-578-02) is a screw and clamp plate that mounts at the measurement band on Ultima section booms to prevent the sail from extending beyond the legal limit.
Dinghy class applications
The Simple Halyard Lock is commonly used on Europe, Finn and Splash class spars where an external halyard hook at the masthead is the standard arrangement.
The Black Band Track Clamp is compulsory under 420 class rules and is made specifically for Ultima section booms. It is also advisable for any other class that uses an Ultima section boom and requires the boom black band limit to be enforced.
The internal halyard locks, rig tension car and halyard hook rack are used across a range of classes and are selected by spar type and halyard system rather than class directly.
