How to choose
A valley cleat holds a line by friction as it drops into toothed jaws. It is the standard cleat type for dinghy halyards and spar-mounted controls. Releasing is done with a single upward pull. Valley cleats mount on curved spar surfaces as well as flat ones, using rivets, countersunk screws or bolts.
Start with line diameter. Most aluminium valley cleats in this collection suit lines from 1 to 6 mm, covering the majority of dinghy halyard and control line sizes. The trapeze and vang cleat suits heavier lines from 4 to 8 mm. The composite open cleat suits even heavier lines from 6 to 12 mm.
Then choose the variant that matches your installation. The open cleat is the simplest version, with no fairlead, suited to applications where the line approaches the cleat cleanly from a consistent angle. The fairlead variant guides the line into the teeth and is useful where the line approaches from a slight angle or where a clean release is more important than simplicity. The side entry variant allows the line to be inserted from the side without threading from the end, which is useful on a mast where access is restricted. The roller versions reduce friction as the line enters the cleat, suited to applications where the line runs frequently and smooth handling matters. The fineline and sail line cleats are handed port and starboard versions designed specifically for leech lines and sail control lines on 3-6 mm diameter.
Tapered pads are available to adjust the cleat angle by 10°. They can be double-stacked for greater angle correction and used as riser pads. Each pad is matched to specific cleat models, so check the compatibility list before ordering.
