Seldén spinnaker poles are built to class-specific lengths and diameters. The correct pole is determined first by your class, then by the diameter specified under class rules or your class tuning guide. Within a given class, a larger diameter gives more stiffness under spinnaker load. If two diameters are listed for your class, the lighter 38mm option suits lighter crews and conditions, while the 42mm suits heavier crews where additional stiffness under load is needed.
The centre fitting choice depends on your uphaul and downhaul system. Poles listed without an eye are supplied ready for the crew to fit the centre attachment of their choice. Poles with a central lift eye are the standard option for most classes using a loop or clip-type uphaul. Poles with a central ramp are used on boats that stow the pole on the boom using a ramp-and-loop system. The Bosun pole has a central cleat for a rope-type uphaul and downhaul. The Vaurien pole is supplied with double eyes ready for a bridle system.
For the 420 class, some poles are available with the beak of the pole end facing down rather than up. This is a crew preference and does not affect class legality.
Carbon poles are available in 33mm and 39mm for classes where light weight and maximum stiffness are priorities. The Flying 15 extra stiff carbon pole has increased wall thickness compared to the standard version, developed specifically to handle the higher bending loads in that class.
The 505 carbon pole uses Spiro launcher ends, designed for use with the Seldén Spiro mast-mounted pole launch system. The Javelin aluminium pole is also available with a single Spiro pole end for boats using that launch system.
