Seldén masts are built to class-specific specifications and are available in multiple section options for many classes. The right choice depends on your class, crew weight, and whether you want an aluminium or carbon spar.
For aluminium masts, Seldén offers a range of sections with different stiffness characteristics. Within a given class, a lighter section such as Zeta or Kappa suits lighter crews and provides more mast bend and gust response. Cumulus is the most popular all-round section for mid-weight crews, with a balanced fore/aft and sideways stiffness. Alto is slightly stiffer than Cumulus and suits heavier crews or classes with higher rig loads, such as the Flying 15 and Fireball. Epsilon is one of the stiffest sections and suits powerful high-load classes including the Flying 15, Korsar, Javelin and Pirat. For the Solo class specifically, the D+ section has a distinctive sideways softness that has made it the dominant choice for many years, and it is available with standard, sleeved, needle taper and extended gooseneck configurations. Lambda is the lightest and most flexible aerofoil section and suits the Streaker, Vaurien, British Moth and Devon Yawl mizzen. The 2420 section is the smallest in the range and is used on the Mirror, Cadet and Snipe.
For carbon masts, Seldén offers three main series. Series 1 uses HR40 high modulus carbon with a 45mm inside diameter tube, giving the maximum stiffness-to-weight ratio and the least windage. It is the championship-specification choice for the Contender, Phantom, Merlin Rocket, National 12 and other performance classes. Series 2 uses Toray T800 intermediate modulus carbon with a 54mm inside diameter tube, delivering similar performance at a more competitive price point. The National 18 uses the Orbis section carbon. All Seldén carbon sections are produced using a CNC-controlled Mandrel Filament Moulding process with pre-preg tow and autoclave curing for consistent quality and precise tolerances.
For ILCA class masts, Seldén are the only ILCA-licensed manufacturer of both composite and aluminium ILCA spars. The ILCA6 aluminium lower mast uses 6082T9 material that is extruded and then cold drawn for a higher yield point than standard extruded tube. The composite ILCA lower and top masts use the MFM pre-preg autoclave process. All ILCA spars are available only through licensed ILCA builders and their authorised dealers.
For Optimist masts, the Club mast uses standard aluminium construction for club racing and training. The Pro Flex and Pro Stiff versions use 7075 T9 alloy with cold drawing and hard anodising for competition. The Pro Flex offers 15% more flexibility than the stiff version, suited to lighter sailors wanting more gust response.
Most complete masts are sold through Seldén's expert dealer network. Some products are marked dealer-only in the store. Rigging packs are class-specific and include the standing rigging, halyards and any required trapeze wires for that class.
