How to choose
A rig tension gauge measures the load in a shroud or stay by deflecting the wire a known amount and reading the corresponding tension from a scale. It allows rig settings to be set accurately and replicated between sessions. This is particularly useful when class tuning guides specify shroud tension as a gauge reading rather than a number of turns on a rigging screw.
The first choice is wire diameter. Each gauge covers a range of wire sizes. Match the gauge to the wire diameter used on your boat. For most dinghy standing rigging in ø2.5mm, ø3mm and ø4mm wire, the PT-1M or Model A is the correct choice. Larger wire diameters in ø5mm to ø7mm suit the PT-2M, and ø7mm to ø10mm suit the PT-3M. For rod rigging, the RT-10 covers sizes -4 through -12.
The second choice is between the professional and standard versions for the ø2.5–4mm range. The Loos PT-1M professional gauge stays attached to the rigging while tension is adjusted, allowing you to watch the reading change in real time. The Model A standard gauge is a simpler and less expensive option for occasional use where this feature is not needed.
